The United States imposed a fine of $89 million on Apple and Goldman Sachs on Wednesday, alleging that they misled users regarding the credit card offered by the iPhone manufacturer. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) reports that hundreds of thousands of users of the Apple Card, launched in collaboration with a major US bank in 2019, have experienced problems with customer service and inaccuracies. Apple did not transmit tens of thousands of customer disputes regarding credit card transactions to Goldman Sachs, and when it eventually did, the bank failed to adhere to federal standards for investigating these claims, according to the bureau. A Federal High Court sitting in Kano on Tuesday sacked the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission(KANSIEC), Sani Malumfashi, for being a member of the ruling New Nigeria People’s Party. The case was filed by Aminu Tiga and the All Progressive Congress. The defendants in the suit are the State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, Haruna Dederi, and 14 others. The Senate on Tuesday set up an ad hoc committee to investigate allegations of drug trafficking against Senator Oyelola Ashiru, by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA. The panel, headed by former Minority Leader, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, is expected to report back within one week. While the Senate did not explicitly state that the NDLEA would be summoned, the panel will likely engage with senior officials from the anti-drug agency during its investigation. Peruvian former President Alejandro Toledo was convicted of taking bribes from Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht and sentenced to 20years and six months in prison on Monday. The verdict marks Peru’s first high-profile conviction related to Brazil’s continent-spanning Lava Jato corruption scandal. Dangote Refinery has petitioned the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking the annulment of the import licenses granted to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL. It also requested the annulment of licenses to Matrix Petroleum Services Limited and A. A. Rano. The refinery wondered why the companies should be allowed to import petroleum products “despite the production of AGO and Jet-A1 that exceeds the current daily consumption of petroleum products in Nigeria by the Dangote Refinery.” Dangote Refinery’s suit is marked case number FHC/ABJ/CS/1324/2024 and is pursuing N100 billion in damages from the NMDPRA.
