Growing up, I never liked Saturdays much as it involved cleaning the entire house; washing scrubbing and mopping. All of which if you didn’t commence at 5am, you would miss out on the Cardbury Breakfast Telly cartoons and that would surely spell the beginning of a sad weekend. High school, college and a Master’s later, I have come to understand that taking care of one’s environment is a key component of taking care of oneself. Not only do we reduce the breeding of carriers of parasitic organisms like flies and mosquitoes, eliminate hiding places for vermins such as rodents which…

In a congratulatory statement signed by his media aide, Kayode Fakuyi, the senator wished the governor-elect a successful tenure in office. “There is no doubt that the challenges ahead of the governor-elect are enormous, especially in the areas of job creation, economy, and security of lives and properties in Ondo State.…
US President-elect Donald Trump has attacked Hillary Clinton over her campaign’s support for a recount of votes in the state of Wisconsin. Trump reminded his Democratic rival that she had already conceded, and published remarks from the presidential debates in which she had urged an acceptance of the poll results. Clinton was then reacting to Trump’s refusal to respect the outcome. The recount in Wisconsin was initiated by Green Party candidate Jill Stein. The state was narrowly won by Mr Trump. Dr Stein also wants recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania, citing “statistical anomalies”. The Green Party nominee reportedly wants to…
It’s not Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari’s fault that Nigeria’s economy is inextricably tied to the global price of oil, now half of its 2014 peak of over $100 per barrel. But the president’s response to the economic crisis has a growing number of people concerned that he doesn’t have what it takes to rescue Nigeria from recession. Warning signs appeared early. Buhari took six months after being elected to name a finance minister, then vowed not to “kill the naira” by devaluing it, against expert advice and with nefarious consequences. His seemingly lackadaisical attitude to the crashing economy spooked investors…
Nigerian militants on Sunday blew up a state-run pipeline in the restive oil producing south, in the latest act of sabotage aimed against the strategic sector, a local official said. “The pipeline popularly known as the Abura line was bombed at about 7:30 am on Sunday morning,” Ughelli south council chairman Paul Etaiga told AFP. The pipeline is owned by the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC) in Delta State. Etaiga said he and security agents had visited the scene of the blast to assess the extent of damage. Local resident Emekpor Emurotu said “we heard the blast this morning followed…
Jose Mourinho was sent off for a second time in a month as his Manchester United side drew against West Ham at Old Trafford. The Portuguese boss kicked a water bottle in reaction to referee Jon Moss showing Paul Pogba a yellow card for diving. Replays showed West Ham’s Mark Noble did not make contact with the France midfielder. Mourinho, sent off by Mark Clattenburg during last month’s 0-0 draw at home to Burnley, got his marching orders from the official moments later. Moss also dismissed him in October 2015, when Mourinho was in charge of Chelsea. The touchline drama…
A lawyer for Hillary Clinton’s campaign says it will participate in a recount of US election votes in Wisconsin. The recount was initiated by Green Party presidential nominee Jill Stein, who is also seeking recounts in Michigan and Pennsylvania, citing “statistical anomalies”. Results would need to be overturned in all three states to alter the outcome of the election. Donald Trump, who narrowly won Wisconsin, called the move a “scam”. The president-elect said it was a way for Dr Stein – who is funding the recount through public donations – to “fill her coffers with money”. “The results of this…
Former Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Tony Anenih, has urged all Nigerians to support President Muhammadu Buhari if the country is to come put of recession. Anenih who retired from partisan politics said he did so because he had no political ambition or points to prove in politics. The former PDP BoT Chairman who announced his disengagement from active politics on Saturday at the presentation of his autobiography, “My Life and Nigerian Politics,” also urged Nigerians to drop partisan politics and support efforts by Buhari to end recession. “I am persuaded that I…
Victor Moses’s blistering run for Chelsea under Antonio Conte continued as Tottenham as the Nigerian forward grabbed the winning goal and was named Man of the Match for the second game running. Chelsea remain top of the table after coming from behind to inflict a first Premier League defeat of the season on Tottenham. Spurs looked on course to recover from their midweek Champions League exit when Christian Eriksen’s superb 11th minute strike put them in front. Mauricio Pochettino’s side were completely dominant until the closing seconds of the first half when Pedro curled in a spectacular right-foot effort to…
Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice but Real Madrid rode their luck to beat Sporting Gijon and go seven points clear at the top of La Liga – for a few hours. Madrid was without Gareth Bale who was injured in Madrid’s Champions League against Sporting Lisbon. But the European champions looked in control when Ronaldo scored twice in the first 18 minutes. His opener was a penalty and his second was a header from Nacho’s cross – his eighth La Liga goal in four games. But Carlos Carmona pulled one back and Duje Cop missed a penalty for the visitors with…
