Commercial activities were paralysed in parts of Balogun market on Lagos Island on Tuesday when a Plaza near the market went in flames. Investigation by a News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) correspondent indicated that Brasas Plaza on Martins Street had an electrical fault on its fifth floor which led to the fire outbreak. Brasas Plaza, a five-storey building, was stocked with clothes, bags and other imported goods on every floor. The Kano State House of Assembly has screened and confirmed the appointment of 20 commissioners nominated by Gov. Abdullahi Ganduje. The House presided over by the Speaker, Alhaji Abdulazeez Garba-Gafasa, after the screening, which lasted for about three hours, later dissolved into committee of the whole. The House of Representatives on Tuesday, raised the alarm over a possible recurrence of the ebola epidemic in the country, urging the federal ministry of health to deploy necessary materials and personnel at the airports, seaports and land borders to screen passengers. Besides, the House has urged the federal government to set aside funds for the management of Ebola virus in the event of its reccurrence in Nigeria. Nigerian police have freed 259 people being held at an Islamic rehabilitation centre in Ibadan, police said on Tuesday, adding that some complained of being beaten regularly by their captors. It was the latest in a series of raids on Islamic institutions in Nigeria in recent weeks. More than 1,000 people, many of them children, have been rescued in total. Many captives have said they were physically and sexually abused and chained up to prevent them escaping. A Chinese pilot has been banned from flying after a photo went viral showing a female passenger in the cockpit. The photo was taken in January on an Air Guilin flight from Guilin city to Yangzhou city, state media said, but was widely shared this week – causing the airline to take action. It shows a woman posing in the cockpit with refreshments laid out next to her. The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has decried the slow pace of work on the Agbara–Seme section of the Lagos–Badagry expressway, describing the condition of the road as “pathetic”.
