Arsenal’s Premier League title aspirations took a significant hit as Aston Villa battled back from two goals down to secure a thrilling 2-2 draw at the Emirates Stadium.

The result marked Unai Emery’s fifth unbeaten encounter against his former club, with three wins and two draws.

With Liverpool earlier stretching their lead at the summit to seven points, the pressure was on Mikel Arteta’s side to deliver against a resurgent Villa. Gabriel Martinelli almost gave the hosts an early breakthrough, but his close-range effort was denied by Emiliano Martínez.

Villa responded with intent as Ian Maatsen’s powerful strike forced a sharp save from David Raya.

The first half saw relentless action, with Ollie Watkins missing a key opportunity for Villa before Arsenal found the opener in the 35th minute. Leandro Trossard’s pinpoint cross found Martinelli, who outmuscled Maatsen to poke home his seventh goal of the campaign.

Buoyed by their lead, Arsenal struck again shortly after the restart. Trossard was again the provider, delivering an inch-perfect pass for Kai Havertz to double the advantage.

Villa, however, refused to capitulate. Five minutes later, Youri Tielemans capitalized on Lucas Digne’s cross to pull one back, and moments after, the Belgian struck the post in a sign of Villa’s growing confidence.

The equalizer came in the 68th minute when Watkins volleyed Matty Cash’s cross into the roof of the net, completing the comeback.

The drama intensified late on. Arsenal thought they had snatched victory in the 88th minute through Mikel Merino, but the goal was disallowed for a handball by Havertz in the build-up.

Merino came agonizingly close again in stoppage time, hitting the post, but Villa held firm to secure a well-earned point.

The draw leaves Arsenal with more ground to cover in the title race, while Villa’s resilience highlights their credentials in an increasingly competitive campaign.
