Former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi has cautioned that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strayed from its basic mission, citing a significant lack of intellectualism and internal debate inside the ruling party.

The former minister of solid minerals development expressed great concern about the party’s current trajectory on the show ‘State Affairs with Edmund Obilo.’

Fayemi, a founding member of the APC, stated that he recently expressed similar concerns during the party’s Southwest congress in Lagos.

“This is not where the party has come from. We have lost our bearing and the vision of the founding fathers of this party,” he said.

He cautioned that abandoning competitive elections in favor of chosen agreements breeds profound resentment among party members.

“Those who don’t get consensus won’t be happy… and you’re waiting for an implosion.”

When asked about President Bola Tinubu’s role, specifically whether his leadership style amounts to imposing candidates, Fayemi disagreed.

While acknowledging Tinubu as an APC founding father, he indicated that the president is just distracted by the enormous strains of national governance.

Fayemi explained why party members continuously defer to the president’s decisions.

“Maybe they just agree with him.”

However, he issued a harsh caution against the rising culture of party faithful coming to the presidential residence for political favors and endorsements, claiming that it jeopardizes the party’s stability.

“It would be unfortunate if everybody were running to Aso Rock because they wanted something,” he warned.
