A footballer who is yet to be identified lost his life in a crash involving a Mercedes-Benz C300 and a bus along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, in the Magboro area of Ogun State.
The incident took place on Monday along the Magboro stretch of the expressway, within the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.
Personnel from the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, together with police officers, confirmed the fatality to our correspondent at the scene, noting that a hit-and-run driver was involved.
A witness, who asked not to be named, said the footballer and other members of his academy were heading to a football match in two vehicles when a trailer reportedly struck the Mercedes-Benz, which then crashed into the bus.
“We were going for a match. We just saw a trailer cross from the other side and hit this Benz, then it hit the bus. Only one person died in the car while the rest of us survived.
“Everyone in the bus is fine, too. The trailer driver fled with his vehicle afterwards,” the eyewitness said.
The Mercedes-Benz, bearing registration number SMK-878KX, was severely crushed as efforts continued to clear its wreckage from the expressway.
