Brazil has reached the final of the Tokyo Olympics men’s football event after defeating Mexico in a pulsating 4-1 penalty shootout.
The match ended in a goalless draw after full-time and 20 minutes of extra time at the Kashima soccer stadium.
Dani Alves scored the opening penalty, just beating goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, before Santos denied Mexico’s Eduardo Aguirre.
The Seleção scored their next three penalties through Gabriel Martinell, Bruno Guimaraes and Reinier to seal their spot in Saturday’s final.
Japan and Spain will face-off to secure a spot against Brazil in the final.
The South Americans defeated Germany 4-2 in their opening Group D game in July before a 0-0 draw with Ivory Coast and a 3-1 victory over Saudi Arabia to qualify as group leaders.
Then they defeated Egypt last week to qualify for the semifinal.
