Suspected terrorists have reportedly abducted a yet-to-be ascertained number of students from a school in Mussa village, Askira/Uba LGA of Borno state.

Quoting residents, Reuters reported that insurgents attacked Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School at about 9am on Friday while classes were ongoing, abducting several students.

A teacher at the school told Reuters that the attackers arrived on motorcycles.

“Despite some students escaping into the bushes, I can tell you many were taken away,” the teacher said.

Reuters reported that Midala Balami, a lawmaker representing Askira-Uba/Hawul federal constituency of Borno in the house of representatives, described the attack as “heartbreaking” and urged authorities to respond swiftly.

The police command in Borno and the military have yet to make any official statement on the incident as of the time of filing this report.

In recent years, terrorists have increasingly targeted schools in northern Nigeria, abducting students for ransom.

Last November, no fewer than 303 students were abducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara LGA of Niger state.

Also, in the same month, terrorists attacked the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School (GGCSS) in Maga, Danko/Wasagu LGA of Kebbi state, and took away 25 students.
