The White House has reaffirmed the United States government’s stance that, under President Donald Trump’s administration, there are only two genders: male and female.
In a post shared on its official X account on Saturday, the White House restated that position, declaring, “It is the official policy of the United States government that there are only two genders: male & female.”
The statement underscores Trump’s long-held stance on gender identity and his administration’s policy of recognizing biological sex as either male or female in federal government operations.
Trump cemented this position on January 20, 2025, with an executive order titled Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.
In Section Two of the order, the President declared that “it is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.”
The order went on to define sex as an individual’s “immutable biological classification as either male or female,” noting that sex was not interchangeable with gender identity.
It further instructed federal agencies to apply these definitions when interpreting and implementing federal laws and government policies.
Among other steps, the directive called on government agencies to eliminate official statements, policies, regulations, and communications deemed inconsistent with the administration’s position.
Agencies were also instructed to make sure that official forms asking for an individual’s sex offered only male or female as options.
The executive order was part of Trump’s wider effort to roll back federal measures introduced by his predecessor, Joe Biden, which recognized gender identity across several areas of government policy.
According to the post, the White House’s latest statement reaffirms the “administration’s position on an issue that has remained a major subject of political and social debate in the United States.”
In January 2025, Trump was inaugurated as the 47th President of the United States, with the ceremony held inside the Capitol Rotunda because of adverse weather conditions.
During his inaugural address, Trump laid out an ambitious agenda for his administration, addressing matters of gender, race, border control, economic reforms, and energy policies.
Trump stated that his administration would recognize only two genders male and female in effect rejecting identities such as transgender, non-binary, and genderqueer.
