The US Secret Service has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred in Washington during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton.

In a statement, the agency said it is collaborating with the Metropolitan Police Department to investigate the incident, which occurred near a security screening area.

The gunfire was reported near the primary magnetometer checkpoint for screening tourists, requiring a swift response from law enforcement authorities on duty.

The Chief of Communications for the United States Secret Service, Anthony Guglielmi, verified on Sunday via its X handle that all protected individuals, including the president and first lady, were safe following the incident.

One suspect has been arrested, and authorities are still assessing the condition of those involved.

Guglielmi stated that teams are on the ground investigating and gathering information and that updates would be issued when additional details are confirmed.

“We will provide updates as they become available and confirm information. Our teams are on the ground assessing the situation and investigating. All of our protectees are safe,” he added.

Chronicle NG reports that Trump has released CCTV footage and photographs of the suspect involved in the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C.

The video, released shortly before the president addressed the media, apparently shows the suspect rushing inside the Washington Hilton ballroom, avoiding security metal detectors as armed agents move to intercept him.

Trump also released photographs of what appeared to be a shirtless guy lying face down in the foyer with his hands secured behind his back, believed to be the alleged gunman.

Trump referred to the man as a “would-be assassin,” asserting that he was heavily armed and had breached a crucial security post before his arrest.

According to the BBC, the president added that the man “charged past a security checkpoint” with multiple weapons.

He reported that a law enforcement officer sustained a gunshot wound during the incident, but he survived due to his bulletproof vest.
