US President Donald Trump has labeled the suspect in the shooting incident at a Washington media event as a “would-be assassin,” claiming he was highly armed and penetrated security before being apprehended.
On Saturday night, during the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton, shooting near a security checkpoint caused panic and forced the evacuation of top officials, journalists, and guests.
According to the BBC on Sunday, Trump stated after the event that the suspect “charged past a security checkpoint” and was carrying many weapons.
He confirmed that a law enforcement officer sustained a gunshot wound, but his bulletproof vest saved his life.
According to authorities, the suspect was promptly detained by Secret Service officials, and the president, first lady, and other high-profile attendees were securely escorted out of the facility.
Witnesses recounted chaotic scenes in which people hid under tables while security personnel raced in with firearms drawn to control the area.
The US president also expressed concerns about the venue’s security, stating that it was “not a particularly secure building” based on the events that took place.
The event has subsequently been canceled and is anticipated to be rescheduled, while investigations continue into the suspect’s motivation and how the breach occurred.
The shooting has raised concerns about security procedures for high-profile public events in the United States, particularly those attended by prominent political leaders and members of the media.
