The governor of Bauchi State, Bala Mohammed, has revealed that more than 10,000 armed bandits are attacking communities in Alkaleri Local Government Area, forcing thousands to flee.

Speaking recently during a visit to displaced residents, the governor described the security situation as “very bad”, saying entire villages have been emptied by heavily armed groups.

The victims fled from Mansur, Yalau, Futuk, Duguri and Gwana communities in Alkaleri LGA and are currently sheltering in a government learning facility in Kashere, Gombe State.

Mohammed said the attackers are not only well-armed but are actively recruiting locals and outsiders, including former illegal miners.

“Our people have been pushed out by about 10,000 well-armed bandits,” he said, calling for urgent federal intervention.

The governor disclosed plans to meet with Bola Tinubu to seek fresh directives for the military and police.

“We’ll use technology and other means to decimate the bandits,” he added.

2,000 Youth to Be Trained as Forest Guards

In response to the crisis, Mohammed announced plans to recruit 2,000 youths into vigilante groups. The recruits will be trained as forest guards to strengthen community-based security efforts.

He also praised the Gombe State government and Kashere community for hosting the displaced persons and apologised for any inconvenience caused.

“This is the first time we’re facing this challenge, but we’ll overcome it,” he assured.

Earlier, the Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, confirmed that additional security personnel have been deployed to restore calm in the affected areas.

“We are committed to the immediate restoration of peace and security,” the police chief said, vowing that no part of Bauchi would be left ungoverned.
