Bayern Munich’s record run of wins since the start of the Bundesligaseason is over despite a late Harry Kane equalizer against Union Berlin.
Their 16 wins in 16 games in all competitions prior to Saturday’s Bundesliga match were the best start to a season by any men’s team from the top five European leagues.
However, this late draw cost them the opportunity to equal a club record for victories at the start of a Bundesliga season.
Bayern fell down as Danilho Doekhi’s attempt from a corner snuck under Manuel Neuer.
This was the first time they had trailed in a game or conceded a goal in the first half of the season.
However, Union’s lead was quickly erased by Diaz’s third goal in two games—a remarkable performance.
Josip Stanisic’s slide rule pass appeared to be heading out, but Diaz maintained the ball in play on the byline with three touches, nudged it past the defender on the spin, and fired a stinging attempt in at the near post from the narrowest of angles.
Kane’s strangely quiet afternoon was summed up when he mistakenly headed a Union free kick directly into the path of Doekhi, who finished past Neuer to steal victory.
However, the England captain made amends in the 93rd minute, heading in from Tom Bischof’s cross for his 13th Bundesliga goal of the season.
Bayern will return from the international break with a home match against Freiburg on Saturday, November 22 (14:30 GMT), while Union will travel to Hamburg to face St. Pauli on Sunday, November 23 (16:30).
