State Chairmen of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) have declared support for the expulsion of the party’s National Chairman, Alhaji Shehu Gabam, and two other members of the National Working Committee over misconduct.

In a statement released on Friday, the Chairman of the SDP State Chairmen Forum and Lagos State Chapter Chairman, Femi Olaniyi, stated that the expulsion of the top party officials was a welcome development.

Olaniyi said, “The departure of Shehu Gabam at this crucial moment marks a victory for the righteous over evil. History will not overlook the years he spent as national chairman.

“Without reservation, Gabam has been a negative influence on the political development of the Social Democratic Party.

“At this point, the forum of Social Democratic Party state chairmen would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the party’s National Working Committee for their role in removing Shehu Gabam and others. It is a relief to see the end of such a detrimental influence.

“Congratulations to all our members across the country and to the party leadership for taking this bold step to protect the party from reckless behavior and mischief.”

The SDP crisis took a fresh turn on Thursday, when the party’s National Working Committee removed numerous prominent leaders, including former National Chairman Gabam and National Youth Leader Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu, amid charges of misbehavior and abuse of position.

The decision was made in Abuja at the conclusion of the NWC meeting after months of inquiry and disciplinary hearings.

Addressing journalists at the party’s National Secretariat, Rufus Aiyenigba, National Publicity Secretary, read the communiqué and stated that the action followed the adoption of the Disciplinary Committee’s report and a subsequent white paper that reviewed the findings and recommendations on the allegations made against the affected officers.

According to him, Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam (former National Chairman) and Mr. Ogbonna Chukwuma Uchechukwu (former National Youth Leader) have been sacked and expelled.

Others include Mr. Clarkson Nnadi, former National Auditor, who was relieved of his duties following voluntary resignation, and eight other members—Adamu Abubakar Modibbo, Abubakar Dogara, Nuraddeen Bisalla, Solsuema Osaro, Ambo Ekpeyong, Eluwa Ifeanyi Henry, Humphrey Unwukaeze, and Judith Israel Shuaibu—for alleged acts of disloyalty and unlawful entry into the party’s national secretariat on July 28, 2025.

The SDP National Working Committee suspended Gabam on June 24 because of allegations of major financial malfeasance, theft, misuse, and diversion of party finances.

The party has also suspended Nze Nnadi Clarkson, the National Auditor, and Uchechukwu Chukwuma, the National Youth Leader, for same offenses.
