Former Nigeria goalkeeper Dosu Joseph is grateful to God after miraculously surviving another life-threatening car accident on Wednesday at Kara on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, where a heavy-duty truck collided with his SUV.
In a statement posted on his social media accounts on Friday, the 51-year-old, who led Nigeria to gold in the Men’s Football Tournament at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, described the near-death experience.
“To God be the glory, another death escaped by the grace and mercy of God. Me and my friend SM were at Enyo Filling Station after Ojodu Berger bus stop to get fuel on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, around 6 p.m. when this MACK truck fully loaded with iron, with registration number LND 470 XX, left the road and crushed my car beyond repairs. Thank God for life,” Dosu stated.
This is the second time the soft-spoken club owner has narrowly escaped death, having been engaged in an accident in 1997 that ended his career at the age of 23 and left his spinal cord in poor condition.
Dosu helped Julius Berger win the Nigeria FA Cup in November 1997, following a remarkable Olympic performance by keeping a clean sheet in the final against Katsina United.
The next year, he was involved in an auto accident on Ikorodu Road in Lagos, which not only ended his career but also left him practically crippled, terminating his time with Serie A team Reggiana.
The former Nigeria international, who also played goalkeeper for Julius Berger FC, stated that the issue has been reported to the Isheri Police Station in Ogun State, where the driver is being held and the truck impounded.
According to him, the owner of the truck says he can’t fix the severely damaged SUV until after a year.
