Nigerian music legend 2Baba has stirred fresh debate in the Afrobeats community after naming Burna Boy as the artist currently leading the global scene.

Speaking on a recent episode of the Mic On Podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, the veteran singer was asked to choose one artist from Afrobeats’ widely recognised “big three”, Wizkid, Burna Boy and Davido.

While acknowledging his admiration for all three stars, 2Baba gave a clear verdict.

“I have my favourite songs from each of them, but I think Burna is on top of the game right now,” he said.

The African Queen hitmaker, whose real name is Innocent Idibia, explained that his assessment was not based on wealth or commercial figures but on a broader view of the global music landscape.

“I don’t know their bank accounts, and I don’t have any information about their personal successes,” he clarified.

“But from common sense and understanding of the music world, I think right now, Burna is on top — not just in Nigeria or Africa, but in the world.”

Burna Boy, born Damini Ogulu, has continued to strengthen his international profile. The Grammy Award winner recently wrapped up his No Sign of Weakness tour, selling out multiple venues across North America and reinforcing his status as a global Afrobeats ambassador.

Wizkid, whose real name is Ayodeji Balogun, has also enjoyed a remarkable run. His album Morayo emerged as the most streamed album on Nigerian Apple Music in 2025, while his recent collaborative EP with Asake further boosted his global reach.

Meanwhile, Davido born David Adeleke  remains one of Nigeria’s most influential music exports. Renowned for his high-energy performances and chart-topping hits, the superstar recently headlined the just-concluded AFCON tournament.

Despite his choice, 2Baba was careful to stress that his remarks were not intended to diminish the achievements of Wizkid or Davido.

“Different people have different styles,” he said.

“This is me looking at the general aspect of things.”
