Xenophobia: Group protests in Ogun, wants Nigeria to cut ties with South Africa

An NGO, Nigeria for Justice, has frowned at the attacks on Nigerians in South Africa and called on the Federal Government to cut all ties with the  country if the situation persists.

The President of the group, Mr Olusola Orelaja, made the call on Thursday on the sidelines of a peaceful protest in Sagamu, Ogun.

The News Agency of Nigeria(NAN) reports that members of the group had converged at the front of the Akarigbo’s palace with placards bearing various inscriptions to press home their demands.

“We believe that what is happening in South Africa is unacceptable worldwide.

” We in the Nigeria for Justice group are here to make our voice known to the world.

“We are very, very accommodating and we want people to treat us that way. Not everybody is a drug dealer. We have people in South Africa that are medical doctors,” Orelaja said.

He further called on the United Nations and other international organisations to stand firm against xenophobia.

Also speaking, Mrs Temitope Shobowale, a member of the group,  who claimed to have lived in Dubai and Kenya, said xenophobia was not only perpetrated in South Africa.

She alleged that the heinous crime of killing foreigners without reason was also ongoing in some African countries and called on the government to address this.

“It is not a crime to travel out. It is not a crime to go and work in any country so far as you are doing a legitimate job,” she said.
