A major diplomatic breakthrough appears to have been achieved after the United States and Iran reached a peace agreement aimed at ending months of conflict, with a formal signing ceremony expected in Switzerland on Friday.

According to Reuters, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced that both nations had agreed to a peace framework following mediation efforts involving Pakistan. The development comes after nearly four months of tensions and military confrontation that raised concerns about wider instability across the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump later confirmed that an agreement had been reached, describing the deal as complete and signalling optimism that hostilities could soon come to an end.

The proposed agreement reportedly includes an immediate cessation of military operations between the two countries, the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz, and the lifting of restrictions affecting Iranian ports. The deal is also expected to pave the way for a 60-day negotiation period focused on unresolved issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme and sanctions relief.

The reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is viewed as one of the most significant aspects of the agreement. The waterway is a critical route for global energy supplies, handling a substantial share of the world’s oil exports. News of the breakthrough prompted a decline in oil prices as markets reacted positively to expectations of improved regional stability.

While the agreement marks a significant step towards peace, several complex issues remain unresolved. Negotiators are expected to spend the coming weeks discussing Iran’s nuclear activities, sanctions, and the future of the country’s enriched uranium stockpile.

International leaders and the United Nations have welcomed the development, describing it as a positive move towards reducing tensions and safeguarding global trade routes. However, some political figures in both the United States and Israel have expressed caution, questioning whether the agreement can withstand future challenges.

The formal signing of the US-Iran peace deal is expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday, with further details likely to emerge once both parties officially endorse the agreement.
