The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has announced a more than 100% increase in tuition fees for undergraduate students.

The declaration was made in a statement sent by the UNICAL’s administration to the media in Calabar on Monday.

According to the statement issued by the institution’s spokesman, Mr. Effiong Eyo, the decision to raise the tuition was made at an emergency meeting of the university’s Senate on Friday.

According to the announcement, the upward review will be implemented in the academic sessions 2022-2023 and 2023-2024.

The increase means that for non-science courses, new students, returning students, and final-year students will pay N111,000, N91,500, and N114,000, respectively.

Similarly, costs for science courses have been raised to N155,000, N125,000, and N148,000 for new students, returning students, and final-year students, respectively.

They must additionally pay N38,500, N21,500, and N21,500 as third-party dues, respectively.

Prior to the increase, tuition rates for an average student were N64,050 for freshmen, N52,050 for final-year students, and N49,500 for returning students, depending on the department.

The management stated that the increase was required due to present economic realities as well as the necessity to maintain the academic standards for which the university is known.
