UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the weekend assaults in Benue State by gunmen in North Central Nigeria that resulted in the killings of scores of civilians.
Guterres stated that the terrorists responsible for the violence should be apprehended.
Chronicle NG reports that over 200 people were killed while sleeping, while numerous others were displaced as a result of barbaric attacks on the town of Yelewata.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated, “We are following the situation.
“The Secretary-General condemns the killing of innocent civilians, including in Nigeria, and we hope that those responsible for this violence will be found and apprehended.”
President Bola Tinubu criticised the current violence in Benue and urged all leaders and residents to promote peace, love, and mutual understanding.
Tinubu will visit the state on Wednesday as part of fresh efforts to promote peace and address the ongoing strife that affects its residents.
During his visit, he is anticipated to meet with stakeholders such as traditional rulers, political, religious, and community leaders, and youth organisations to discuss long-term solutions to the conflict.
The president sent his heartfelt condolences to the victims‘ families and everyone touched by the catastrophe.
