Ukraine advance deeper into Russia’s Kursk region

Ukraine said on Wednesday that its forces had moved deeper into Russia’s Kursk area. This is the largest foreign invasion of Russia since World War II, which puts President Vladimir Putin in a tough spot, according to US President Joe Biden.

Ukrainian troops crossed the Russian border into the western Kursk region on Aug. 6. This action has been seen by Putin as a significant provocation, potentially influencing future ceasefire negotiations.

Ukraine has gained control over a portion of the border region of Kursk, which has led to ongoing clashes with Russian forces. Despite Putin’s declaration that the Ukrainian troops would be removed, the fighting has persisted for over a week without success in removing them.

The Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, provided an update on the progress of Kyiv’s forces in the Kursk region. He mentioned that they have made further advancements, gaining an additional one to two kilometres on Wednesday.

“We continue to advance further in the Kursk region,” Zelenskiy wrote in a statement on Telegram, “from one to two kilometres in various areas since the start of the day. And more than 100 Russian prisoners of war in the same period.”

According to the Russian defence ministry, a significant number of Ukrainian drones were reportedly shot down in various regions including Kursk, Voronezh, Belgorod, and Nizhny Novgorod. The report mentioned that missiles had been intercepted, and featured footage of Sukhoi Su-34 bombers carrying out airstrikes on Ukrainian positions in the Kursk region.

According to the ministry, Russian forces successfully defended against a number of Ukrainian attacks in the Kursk region, specifically at Russkoye Porechnoye, which is located 18 km (11 miles) from the border. Pro-Russian war bloggers have reported that the situation on the front has now been stabilised.

According to an anonymous Ukrainian security source, a recent drone attack targeted four Russian military airfields, with the aim of weakening Russia’s capacity to launch gliding bomb attacks on Ukraine.
Russia’s National Guard has announced an increase in security measures at the Kursk nuclear power plant, which is situated a mere 35 km (22 miles) away from the ongoing conflict.

The recent Ukrainian incursion into Russian territory has had a significant impact on the ongoing conflict that has been going on for over two years. There have been recent developments in eastern Ukraine, where Russia has been making progress. This comes after Kyiv’s counteroffensive in 2023 failed to achieve significant gains against Russian forces.

However, Ukraine’s unexpected move carries significant risks for Russia, Ukraine, and the West. The international community is eager to prevent a direct clash between Russia and the US-led NATO military alliance, which has been supporting Kyiv in its defence against Moscow.

Biden mentioned that American officials maintained regular communication with Ukraine regarding the incursion. He noted that this situation had posed a significant challenge for Putin, who had deployed thousands of troops into Ukraine in February 2022.

The White House stated that Ukraine did not provide any prior notice of its incursion, and the United States was not involved in the operation. Russian officials have implied that Ukraine’s Western supporters must have been aware of the assault.
