Terrorists have killed a resident and abducted two women during an attack on a Fulani settlement in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of Kwara State.
The incident took place on Monday night in the Sodo/Sawmill neighbourhood on the outskirts of town.
Residents said the terrorists stormed the settlement around 8 p.m., shooting sporadically and causing panic among the villagers.
According to sources, the attackers intended to target a prominent Fulani leader in the community but were unable to locate him.
The gunmen then abducted two women who were said to be the Fulani leader’s wives before fleeing the scene.
During the attack, one resident was also shot and killed.
Security personnel apparently responded to distress calls, while troops battled the attackers and forced them to flee into a nearby woodland.
Adekimi Ojo, the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, confirmed the event on Tuesday, saying one guy was slain and two ladies were taken.
“Yes, one man was killed while two women, 25 and 35 years of age, who are wives of the Seriki Fulani, were abducted,” Ojo said.
The police commissioner revealed that preliminary findings indicated that the attackers had targeted the Fulani leader, identified as an Ardo, but were unable to capture him.
“The attackers targeted the Fulani leader, Ardo. And for now, we are still on their trail because before we got there, the military had repelled them before they ran into the forest, but we are on their trail,” he stated.
