Terrorists were repelled by security personnel at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, NIPSS, Kuru, Plateau State, on Wednesday night, killing one of the assailants during a gun battle.
The attack began at 11 p.m., when the shooters reportedly attempted to breach the institute’s security perimeter but were repulsed by security guards.
Dr Osime Samuel, the institute’s head of public affairs, acknowledged the occurrence in a statement released Thursday.
According to the statement, the terrorists engaged security personnel in a gun battle before fleeing following what it characterised as a rapid and coordinated reaction by security forces.
It further stated that one of the intruders was killed during the exchange of fire, while others escaped with varied degrees of injury.
The statement read, “The National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, wishes to inform the public that another attempt by unidentified armed assailants to breach the Institute’s security perimeter was successfully repelled by security personnel late yesterday night, Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
“The attackers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were forced to retreat following the swift and coordinated response of the security forces. One of the assailants was neutralised during the encounter, while others were reported to have escaped with varying degrees of injuries.
“The Institute is pleased to report that there was no breach of the security perimeter. All participants, staff, residents, and institute facilities remain safe and secure.
“Security agencies have intensified efforts to apprehend the fleeing suspects, while surveillance and other proactive security measures have been further strengthened within and around the Institute.”
The institute informed participants, staff, their families, and the general public that the safety of people and property remained its top priority while advising citizens to avoid misinformation that could cause panic.
The most recent incident occurred just two weeks after suspected gunmen attacked the institute and the neighbouring community.
Three individuals were murdered in the attack, including security officers, forcing security services to increase surveillance around the country’s leading policy and leadership training institution.
