The Super Eagles have landed at Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano State, following their journey in Libya, ahead of the 2025 African Cup of Nations qualification.
Chronicle NG reported that the Super Eagles’ aircraft from Nigeria on Sunday was suddenly rerouted to a remote airport distant from the match venue, necessitating an additional three-hour drive to their arrival.
The situation deteriorated as the players, pilots, and other personnel were trapped at the Libyan airport for more than 13 hours, without access to necessities such as food, water, or a place to relax.
Photographs of the squad sleeping on benches went viral early Monday, triggering censure from Nigerian officials.
However, the team has already landed in Kano after their jet was allowed to takeoff in Libya.
The Super Eagles captain announced in a statement on X that the team will be returning to the country following the ill treatment they received in Libya.
As a result, William Troost-Ekong and other Super Eagles players decided they would boycott the game.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has also sent a protest letter to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the development.
