Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara stated on Monday that he has committed no crimes that merit impeachment by the Rivers State House of Assembly.
“Let them come out and tell the Rivers people what offence I have committed to warrant any impeachment,” the governor urged supporters at the Assembly Complex.
The governor, who promised the people of the state that they would reap the dividends of democracy, stated that he would address the issue at the proper moment.
“Let me assure the Rivers people that I will continue to ensure that you reap the dividends of democracy. At the appropriate time, I will address the press,” he said. he stated.
Chronicle NG had earlier reported a new crisis has seized the Rivers Assembly amid speculations of an approaching impeachment proceeding against Fubara after the House ousted its leader, Edison Ehie, on Monday.
House members, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, issued Fubara an impeachment notice before fleeing for safety as tear gas was thrown outside the complex.
Addressing his supporters outside the Assembly Complex, the governor stated that he has done nothing to deserve an impeachment procedure by the Assembly.
The incident happened just hours after a fire broke out at the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.
It was unclear whether the fire was related to the political squabble, but allegations of a feud between Fubara and his predecessor, now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, had been circulating for some time.
