The Nigeria Customs Service has said the fortified bags of rice for distribution are fit for human consumption to allay public fears.
The 25-kg bags of rice had the bold label “FGN Customs, not-to-be-resold,” along with a QR code.
“Distributing fortified food items fit for human consumption is our way of saying; we see you, we hear you, and we are in this together, the Service said.”
The intention is to reach out directly to members through these organised structures to ensure the maximum impact of this exercise, Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi disclosed on Tuesday.
Adeniyi noted that the exercise would not last forever, adding that it would be a way for the service to dispose of seized food items (bags of rice) for now.
“We are here to shed light on the commitment of the NCS to protecting our society by ensuring the availability of essential food items. In recent months, the government has been addressing the challenges faced within our economy.
Chronicle NG reported that the target groups were artisans, teachers, nurses, religious bodies, and other Nigerians within customs operational areas.
