Residents of Sowo Village blocked the Abeokuta-Sagamu Motorway to protest the deaths of four students from Iddo Primary School in Kobape, Ogun State, in a road crash on Wednesday.

The protest comes just 48 hours after a motorcyclist and his passenger were crushed to death at the Siun junction of the same motorway.

The accident occurred around 3 p.m. when a vehicle rammed into the schoolchildren while they were returning.

Eyewitnesses mentioned that some angry youths attempted to lynch the driver of the vehicle, but he was rescued by security operatives.

On Wednesday, Babatunde Akinbiyi, spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, confirmed that a Toyota Corolla with number plate KSF 579 DM rammed into a group of students returning from school, killing four on the spot.

The students were taken to the General Hospital in Ijaiye and were later confirmed dead.

He said, “According to eyewitnesses, four male children of Iddo Primary School, Iddo, Kobape, were walking home from school when a Toyota Corolla that was speeding lost control and rammed into the pupils on the walkway.

“The impact of the collision reportedly led to the death of the four pupils at the spot of the accident.

“The pupils were taken to the General Hospital, Ijaiye, for certification by the emergency responders and later handed over to their families for burial.”

Akinbiyi further stated that some community members took to the motorway to protest the death of the pupils, but the situation was brought under control with the intervention of sister security agencies.

“Community members protested the death of the pupils, which affected traffic flow, but with the combined efforts of TRACE, the police, and the Nigerian Army, normalcy was restored,” he said.

A similar accident happened on Wednesday, in which two people lost their lives in a multi-vehicle collision that occurred at the Siun junction of the same motorway.

Akinbiyi stated that the collision occurred after a truck lost control and collided with other vehicles.

He described the cars involved as a car with the licence plate KTU 152 JB, a Mazda bus with the plate LSR 345 YK, a motorcycle with the plate KNN 515 VD, and a truck with the plate T5582 LA.
