A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was shot dead in Osogbo, Osun State, after hoodlums allegedly clashed with members of Davido’s security team.
The incident occurred on Wednesday shortly after David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, accompanied his uncle, Ademola Adeleke, governor of Osun, to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.
Adeleke had visited the monarch to present his certificate of return after winning the August 15 governorship election.
According to the Osun State Police Command, the governor arrived at the palace at about 3:15pm in a convoy of about 20 vehicles.
The police said trouble started after the visit when Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of the singer’s security team.
Taoreed was described by the police as an ex-convict, suspected notorious thug and alleged member of the Eiye confraternity.
The confrontation reportedly attracted other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed movement in the area.
The governor’s convoy eventually left the area safely.
The police said the suspected gang members later left the area but allegedly shot Yusuf, a resident of Oke-Ayepe, on their way out.
Abiodun Ojelabi, police spokesperson in Osun, said officers found Yusuf lying in a pool of blood after receiving information about the shooting at Itaolokan.
He was taken to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The police said a full-scale investigation had been launched and efforts were underway to identify and arrest the fleeing suspects.
Samuel Etaifo, commissioner of police (election) for Osun, condemned the killing and assured residents that the command would deploy all available resources to apprehend those responsible.
The police urged anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report to the nearest police station or contact the command through its official channels.
