The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested one Alexander Peter for reportedly hacking to death his mother, Mrs Atiny Peter, 71, with a machete.

The incident took place in Ikot Inyang village, which is part of the state’s Oruk Anam LGA.

CP Baba Mohammed Azare, the State Commissioner of Police, announced the arrest during a news briefing on Thursday at the police headquarters in Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo.

The police commissioner stated that Alexander, the suspect, was caught on June 10 and that investigations are still underway to uncover the cause for the cruel conduct.

“The gruesome incident occurred in Ikot Inyang Village, Oruk Anam Local Government Area, where the suspect reportedly used the machete to hack his mother to death,” Azare said, noting that the command is working to “unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the motive behind the heinous crime.”

The CP reported 54 arrests for criminal offences in the last six weeks, as well as the recovery of 50 arms and ammunition.

The murder of an elderly woman by her own son has raised concerns in the community.
