Edo has started paying unpaid gratuities to its pensioners, 17 years after it ceased.

Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the Edo government’s Special Adviser on Media Projects, said this in Benin on Thursday.

He informed reporters that one of the reasons for the payment restart was to mitigate the impact of the loss of fuel subsidy on retirees.

He stated that the administration was negotiating terms to guarantee that all overdue gratuities were paid.

Edo last paid gratuities in 2006, during the administration of Chief Lucky Igbenedion, report said.

Obaseki, according to Osagie, is a performing governor who has also initiated the provision of 24-hour free Wi-Fi access in select public areas in the state.

He mentioned the king’s square (Oba Market) in Benin, the Oredo Local Government Region, Eki-Osa (Osa Market) in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area, and sections of the Egor Council Region.

“Governor Obaseki has done all of this for residents to have easy communication through social media without cost.”

“In light of the three-day weekly work schedule for civil and public servants, the governor began working with various Ministries, departments, agencies, and other public places to ensure unlimited internet access for workers,” Osagie stated.

He stated that providing free internet was also part of measures to mitigate the impact of the elimination of fuel subsidy.
