Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo State, awarded N42.5 million to Edo Queens’ players, coaches, and backroom staff on Thursday following the team’s victory in the Nigeria Women’s Football League Super Six Tournament in Yenagoa, Bayelsa.

The 30 players received N1 million each, the technical crew N5 million, the backroom staff N5 million, and the team’s supporters group N2.5 million.

With the win, the Queens qualified to represent Nigeria in the CAF Women’s Champions League, Africa’s premier women’s club football league.

Elated fans, led by Edo State Governor’s wife, Dr. Betsy Obaseki, joined a motorcade of the victorious Queens from Western Boys High School in Ikpoba-Hill and cheered them through Aduwawa, Akpakpava, Plymouth, and Ring Road before arriving at the Government House in Benin City, where Governor Obaseki received them.

Obaseki was accompanied by the Peoples Democratic Party’s gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, and other top government officials in receiving the triumphant girls.

The governor, who praised the team for their outstanding performance in the 2023–24 Nigeria Women’s Football League season and triumph in the Super Six Tournament, promised them the state government’s continued support.

“You have tried and have made us proud. Money alone can’t do it all, but we will give you money for a job well done and for making us proud. Each player of the team will get N1 million for the achievement, while the coaches will get N5 million,” Obaseki stated.

“I am so happy and proud today, as you have done us proud by bringing this trophy home. The trophy we have been looking for for the past 29 years is now with us. We know you will continue to be champions. I encourage you to work hard, as your government and governor will continue to support you.

“Whether I am here or not, the person who will replace me will continue to support you.”

In addition to thanking Edo Queens, Obaseki presented Bendel Insurance’s fan group with a new bus.
