The Plateau State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Yavana Jonathan, has appealed to the Nigerian Army to intensify support for corps members deployed in the state, emphasising the need for enhanced security and welfare.

Jonathan made an appeal on Wednesday while paying a courtesy call to Major General Folusho Oyinlola, the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and Commander of Operation Safe Haven, at Maxwell Khobe Cantonment in Jos.

He praised the military’s assistance in ensuring peace and security during NYSC orientation sessions, emphasising the importance of continuous partnership for corps members’ safety, especially in high-risk locations.

A statement issued after the visit by the Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Division, Nigerian Army, Lt Col Aliyu Danja, quoted the NYSC Coordinator as saying, “The discipline and training imparted by the military have been invaluable in preparing Corps Members for national service.

“However, we must reinforce this partnership to address ongoing security challenges and ensure their well-being throughout the service year.”

The coordinator also expressed gratitude for the Army’s hospitality toward corps members stationed at the cantonment and called for additional welfare initiatives to improve their service experience.

In his remark, Major General Oyinlola lauded the NYSC’s contributions to national unity and youth development, describing the scheme as a critical instrument of social cohesion.

“The NYSC is not just a programme; it is a cornerstone of our national social fabric established under a military government to foster unity among Nigeria’s diverse communities and has continued to instil patriotism in our youth,” Oyinlola noted.

The GOC emphasised the commitment of Operation Safe Haven to protecting all residents, including Corps Members, and highlighted ongoing security measures within NYSC camps.

“We prioritise the safety of corps members and will continue working with community leaders and security agencies to create a secure environment for them, Oyinlola stated.

He also informed the NYSC of an open-door approach for future discussions about support and partnership.

The visit concluded with an exchange of souvenirs, the signing of the visitors’ book, and a group photograph, demonstrating the NYSC’s strengthened alliance with the military in Plateau State.
