The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has warned Nigerians against a fraudulent social media post claiming that a free correction portal has been opened for modifications to National Identification Number (NIN) records.

The social media post, referenced in the commission’s public notice on Tuesday, contains links purportedly meant for name, date of birth, gender, and other corrections.

Speaking on the matter, NIMC described the post as a phishing scam designed to defraud unsuspecting members of the public.

The agency said the links circulating on social media are not authorised and urged Nigerians not to click on them.

“The NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission said.

The agency assured citizens that the national identity database remains secure and fully protected.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the agency said.

NIMC advised Nigerians seeking to modify, update, or correct their personal information to use only its approved channels, noting that data modifications can be carried out through its official self-service portal or at any accredited NIMC enrolment centre nationwide.

The agency also urged the public to verify information through its official website and customer service channels before taking any action.

“Do not click any unauthorized links,” NIMC said.

The commission asked Nigerians to access correction services only through its self-service modification platform and official offices.

“NIMC Self-Service Portal: Log on to our official self-service website: https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng/

NIMC Offices: Visit any official NIMC enrolment centre closest to you.

Verify updates via our official website (www.nimc.gov.ng),”

NIMC also said inquiries can be directed to its toll-free customer care line.
