The Nigerian Army says it is fully prepared to prevent any attempt by extremist groups to infiltrate Nigeria as security concerns grow across the Sahel region.

Speaking at the grand finale of the Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL) 2026 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, said the military remains on high alert over the activities of foreign jihadist groups operating near Nigeria’s borders.

According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication covering the Lake Chad region, Shaibu said the changing security situation in neighbouring countries requires increased vigilance and sustained military preparedness.

He disclosed that the army has already detected indicators of potential cross-border terrorist threats and is fully equipped to respond.

Shaibu said the Nigerian Army remains committed to its constitutional responsibility of defending the country’s territorial integrity, protecting citizens and supporting civil authorities when necessary.

He added that more than 80 per cent of Army personnel are currently deployed across various operational theatres, tackling insurgency, terrorism, banditry, separatist violence and other security threats.

The army chief said sustained offensive operations, improved intelligence gathering and closer collaboration with other security agencies have continued to deliver positive operational results.

He also revealed that the Army is investing in advanced training, modern combat equipment and stronger intelligence capabilities to improve its effectiveness.

However, Shaibu stressed that military action alone cannot permanently solve Nigeria’s security challenges. He called for stronger cooperation among governments, local communities, traditional rulers, civil society organisations and citizens to promote peace and national development.

He reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to professionalism and lawful operations, adding that troops will continue implementing the Federal Government’s directive to decisively confront criminal elements threatening national security.
