The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the implementation of a GIS-enabled alphanumeric digital postcode system for Nigeria.

The approval was announced by Bosun Tijani, Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, following the council meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.

The approval is the latest development on the initiative and comes four years after the project was first introduced.

In 2022, Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) and the National Population Commission (NPC) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the rollout of a digitised postcode system for Nigeria.

A year later, NIPOST said the digital postcode system would be launched in the country by June 2023.

In a post on X on Wednesday, Tijani said the initiative forms part of the ministry’s strategic blueprint and is aimed at modernising Nigeria’s national addressing framework.

He said the system would be implemented in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), led by Tola Odeyemi.

“We will introduce a modern, geospatial intelligent addressing system that improves accuracy across the country and enables faster and more reliable mail and parcel processing,” Tijani posted.

“Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services.”

He said as Nigeria’s digital economy expands, foundational infrastructure, such as a modern addressing system, is critical to connecting citizens, businesses and public institutions more efficiently.

The minister added that the approval reflects the federal government’s commitment to building an enabling environment for a modern, inclusive and globally competitive digital economy.
