AFCON 2023: Peseiro admits his Super Eagles winning strategy suffered
Jose Peseiro has resigned as coach of Nigeria's men national team

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has stated that it would sack coach Jose Peseiro if they had the money to pay him off following two dismal performances in World Cup qualifiers.

This was disclosed by Nse Essien, an NFF executive committee member.

Nigeria’s World Cup qualification is already at risk following only two draws in their first two qualifiers against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Zimbabwe took the lead in the first half thanks to a straight free kick from Walter Musona, but Leicester forward Kelechi Iheanacho equalized midway through the second half.

The Super Eagles’ sluggish start to qualification has been blamed on Portuguese coach Peseiro.

“If we had the money to pay for compensation, we would be willing to relieve him of his job. We’re not happy,” NFF member Essien told reporters.

“Everybody is asking for the sack of the head coach. It’s unfortunate that, out of a possible six points, we only have two. We’re in a very precarious situation.”

South Africa has three points in Group C of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. They are expected to expand their advantage when they visit Rwanda on Tuesday, while Lesotho hosts Benin in South Africa.

Nigeria has two points from two games and has failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The qualifications will begin in June 2024, with Nigeria trying to make up lost ground when South Africa visits Uyo in the country’s south.
