In a determined crackdown by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority an individual posing as a LASTMA officer was arrested on Oshodi Bridge for extorting motorists.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Adewunmi Taiwo, a 45-year-old from Ilesha, Osun State, had been using a white Hiace Coaster bus with license plate KJA 724 YJ to intimidate drivers and collect illegal fees.
LASTMA officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle and discovered an official LASTMA uniform, including a branded raincoat, confirming Mr. Taiwo’s intent to deceive unsuspecting motorists.
During interrogation, Taiwo admitted to extorting both commercial and private drivers, earning between N15,000 and N25,000 daily from high-traffic areas along Ikorodu Road and the Oshodi-Mile 2 expressway.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, spoke on the arrest, saying, “We are unwavering in our commitment to uphold LASTMA’s integrity and professionalism. I take this opportunity to issue a stern warning to individuals who exploit LASTMA’s identity for unlawful gains. Any attempt to tarnish the agency’s reputation will be met with the full force of the law, as this man will be charged accordingly.”
The arrest follows multiple reports from the public regarding the suspicious Hiace Coaster bus, prompting LASTMA’s Surveillance and Monitoring Unit to investigate.
Bakare-Oki emphasized that the agency is determined to combat any illegal activities that could harm its reputation or the safety of Lagos State’s motorists.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr. Adebayo Taofiq, urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through its toll-free hotlines.
“Our mission is to maintain efficient traffic management across Lagos. We encourage motorists to help us protect this vision by reporting any suspicious activities,” he stated.
The suspect, Mr. Taiwo, is expected to face charges as LASTMA intensifies its efforts to maintain order and protect Lagos motorists from fraudulent practices.
