Argentina forward Lionel Messi has spoken on a potential appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he remains excited about the idea but will only take part if he feels physically capable of helping the Argentina national team.

According to a post on X by Fabrizio on Tuesday, Messi said, “I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically and be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group. I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate.”

Messi, who would be 39 during the 2026 World Cup, led Argentina to a historic victory in Qatar 2022, finally winning the trophy that had eluded him throughout his stellar career.

Since then, speculation has grown as to whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will continue his international career long enough to defend the championship in North America.

Despite his move to Major League Soccer in 2023, Messi has continued to represent Argentina in World Cup qualifying matches, producing great performances that keep the door open for a last World Cup run.

For the time being, Messi’s primary emphasis is on monitoring his physical condition and contributing to his club and country whenever he feels ready.

His decision to participate in 2026 will ultimately be determined by his ability to execute at the level that he and his team expect.
