Several residents of settlements in Jwak Maitumbi community, Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, are feared dead following an attack by suspected militia members.
The attack, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of Sunday, also left about 45 residential shelters destroyed, while large quantities of crops were reportedly damaged.
According to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication, the incident was reported at about 7:45am, prompting troops to deploy to the affected community.
A military security source told the publication that troops found about 45 houses destroyed when they arrived, while valuables belonging to residents had also been looted.
Zagazola Makama reported that several residents were allegedly shot and killed before their attackers slaughtered them.
The violence reportedly triggered mass displacement, forcing women, children and elderly residents to flee the community for safety.
The attackers also allegedly entered farms belonging to Fulani residents and used cutlasses to destroy large quantities of crops.
Following the attack, troops reportedly summoned the Galadima and youth leader of Jwak Maitumbi and directed the community leadership to assist security agencies in identifying those responsible.
The incident has raised concerns over possible reprisals in Plateau State, where communal violence has frequently been followed by tit-for-tat attacks, resulting in further deaths, destruction and displacement.
Zagazola Makama warned that the destruction of homes and crops could fuel revenge attacks if affected residents believe those responsible have not been identified or brought to justice.
The publication said the intervention by security forces was aimed at promoting accountability, preventing reprisal attacks and easing tensions between communities.
Troops have reportedly remained in the area while engaging community and traditional leaders to de-escalate tensions and restore calm.
Alfred Alabo, spokesperson for the Plateau State Police Command, was contacted for comment but had not responded as of press time.
