Liverpool in talks with Andoni Iraola after sacking Slot

Andoni Iraola has emerged as the leading candidate to become Liverpool’s next manager following the dismissal of Arne Slot after two seasons in charge at Anfield.

Liverpool confirmed on Saturday that Slot had been relieved of his duties despite guiding the club to their 20th league title in his debut campaign. However, a disappointing second season, which ended with a fifth-place Premier League finish, prompted the club’s hierarchy to make a change.

The Reds have already approached Iraola to discuss the vacant position, with the Spaniard now considered the frontrunner to take over.

Iraola recently left Bournemouth after enhancing his reputation as one of Europe’s most highly-rated coaches. The 43-year-old is admired for his attacking philosophy and high-intensity style of play — qualities Liverpool are believed to be seeking as they plan the next phase of the club’s development.

Liverpool’s owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), said the decision to part ways with Slot was not taken lightly, acknowledging the Dutchman’s achievements and his role in delivering the club’s record-equalling 20th league title.

Despite securing Champions League qualification, Liverpool endured a difficult campaign, finishing 25 points behind champions Arsenal and recording their lowest points tally since the 2015-16 season.

    • Bournemouth appoint Marco Rose as Iraola successor

The decision was made by Michael Edwards, FSG’s chief executive, and sporting director Richard Hughes, who previously worked closely with Iraola during his time as Bournemouth’s technical director.

That connection could prove significant as Liverpool look to appoint a manager capable of restoring the aggressive, front-foot football that defined much of the club’s success under former boss Jurgen Klopp.

Bournemouth impressed under Iraola this season, finishing just one place and three points behind Liverpool while securing qualification for next season’s Europa League.

Earlier this month, Mohamed Salah called for Liverpool to return to being a “heavy metal attacking team that opponents fear” after a campaign in which the club struggled to maintain consistency.

Iraola’s attacking credentials and ability to maximise performance with limited resources have made him an attractive option for Liverpool’s leadership, who believe a new direction is needed to revive the team’s trajectory.

Slot departs Anfield with a Premier League title to his name and widespread appreciation from supporters. The Dutchman was also praised for the leadership and compassion he displayed during one of the club’s most difficult periods following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota.

While Liverpool have yet to make an official appointment, attention is now firmly focused on Iraola as the club prepares for a new chapter.
