US rapper Michael Render, popularly known as Killer Mike, was arrested over an altercation shortly after winning three Grammy awards, Los Angeles police said on Sunday.

According to Los Angeles police spokesperson Mike Lopez, the detention stemmed from an altercation inside the Crypto.com Arena, where the event was conducted.

Killer Mike, 48, was arrested on a misdemeanour allegation, Mr. Lopez said.

He was later released, and he is set to appear in court later this month.

Killer Mike was led away from the scene in handcuffs by police officers, according to video footage.

It happened just after the rapper and political activist won three Grammys, his first in 20 years.

His song Scientists & Engineers, which featured André 3000, Future, and Eryn Allen Kane, received awards for best rap song and best rap performance.

Michael earned him his third Grammy for best rap album.

Receiving his awards, the 48-year-old said: “This is for all the people who think you’re too old to rap. We keep hip-hop alive. Never ever stop doing what you do.”

Eyewitnesses at the arena reported hearing someone shout “free Mike” as the rapper was carried away.

Killer Mike has been outspoken about topics that affect black Americans, such as police brutality and racism.

Taylor Swift dominated the Grammy Awards, making history with her fourth victory for best album.
