The Kano State Government is financing a total of 1001 postgraduate students for various postgraduate studies in India and Uganda.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf made the announcement during the flag-off ceremony for the start of the scholarship scheme on Thursday evening at Government House in Kano.

He stated that the overseas scholarship programme will begin with 550 students.

Yusuf stated that the foreign scholarship scheme was created by the state’s former governor, Senator Rabi’u Kwankwaso, and that it has brought many beneficial benefits to Kano State and the nation at large.

“It is clearly seen that some of those trained under the scheme by Kwankwaso are now occupying important positions of authority in the present administration.”

Among those who benefited from the scheme under Senator Rabiu Kwakwaso’s tenure are the Commissioner for Higher Education, Dr. Yusuf Ibrahim Kofarmata; the State Statistician, Prof. Aliyu Isa Aliyu; and the Special Adviser on Innovation, Dr. Bashir Muzakkir.

“Let me say that the foreign scholarship scheme was initiated by the administration of our mentor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

“The distinguished senator sponsored three batches of students to study abroad in about 16 countries across the globe.

“This singular effort by his administration has produced many professionals and PhD holders, thousands of masters degree holders, thousands of professionals in medical sciences, engineering, natural sciences, pilots, maritime specialists, etc.

“The practical effort of his Excellency Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso’s administration has been a huge impetus for our administration to continue with this very useful and popular policy of foreign scholarship.

“In this regard, I am very happy to say that some of the products of this policy are today occupying important government positions of authority in the present administration.

“Finally, ladies and gentlemen, it is my singular honour to flag up the resumption of the foreign scholarship programme of Kano State and the sponsorship of the first set of 550 scholars out of 1001 to face postgraduate studies abroad,” Gov. Yusuf said.
