Insecurity: NYSC moves orientation camp, blacklists Kebbi LGAs

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stopped posting corps members to three local government areas in Kebbi State due to rising insecurity, while also pushing for the relocation of its orientation camp.

The affected LGAs are Augie LGA, Arewa LGA and Sakaba LGA.

    Security concerns force posting restrictions

Bala Kagarko, NYSC coordinator in Kebbi, disclosed the development on Tuesday during an interview with journalists at the temporary orientation camp in Basura, Jega LGA.

He said worsening insecurity has forced the scheme to drastically cut down corps deployment in the state.

“For the safety of corps members, we are no longer posting them to Augie, Arewa and Sakaba local government areas of the state,” he said.

Shortage of corps members in Kebbi

Kagarko noted that the security situation has had wider consequences on manpower distribution across the state.

“We no longer have enough doctors to post to state hospitals, and there are not enough corps members to deploy to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to development.

“Kebbi now has the least number of corps members in the country. Several appeals have been made to the appropriate authorities, but we are yet to receive a response.”

    Camp relocation under consideration

The NYSC also confirmed plans to move its orientation camp from Dakingari to a safer location within the state.

Dakingari currently hosts the camp, but officials say it is no longer considered secure enough for corps members.

    Rising violence in affected areas

The decision comes amid renewed banditry and insurgent activity in parts of northern Nigeria.

Last week, suspected Lakurawa insurgents attacked Fasken Rafi in Arewa LGA, killing at least 20 people, according to reports.

The Kebbi State government described the incident as tragic and extended condolences to victims’ families and residents.

Umar Tafida, who led a government delegation to the community, said authorities remain committed to improving security and protecting lives and property.
