Heavy security presence at Kano govt house over gov’s rumoured APC defection

A heavy security presence was spotted yesterday around the Kano State Government House, amid widespread rumors of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s purported plan to desert the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS) were deployed in huge numbers and stationed at crucial positions within and around the Government House, as well as important access roads leading to the seat of government.

A convoy of security vehicles, including Armored Personnel Carriers (APCs) and several police and DSS Hilux vans, reinforcing checkpoints and tightening access control to the area, was observed at the government house, a development that heightened tension within the state capital.

Although the state administration and security forces did not publish an official statement explaining the rationale for the significant deployment, the incident coincided with mounting rumors that Governor Yusuf was about to defect from the NNPP to the APC.

The rumored defection has sparked heated political debate across the state, with party supporters and political watchers closely tracking events at Government House.

Governor Yusuf was elected on the NNPP platform in 2023, bringing the APC out of power in Kano State and restoring the Kwankwasiyya political movement to the state’s leadership after years of opposition.

His success was largely due to the NNPP’s strong grassroots structure and the influence of the party’s national leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

Since taking office, the Yusuf administration has been embroiled in bitter political conflict with the APC, particularly over control of political structures and governance narratives in the state.

Defection rumors involving the governor have previously been quickly dismissed by the NNPP, which has routinely branded such claims as political misinformation.

However, the latest rumor has gained steam in light of recent political realignments in Nigeria, as the ruling APC steps up efforts to consolidate power ahead of future elections.

As of press time, neither Governor Yusuf nor the leadership of the NNPP had formally responded to the reports, and people continued to express alarm over the unprecedented security buildup outside the Government House.
