Gunmen shot and killed a yet-to-be University of Benin student as he drove out of the campus’s main gate in Ugbowo in his JLK Mercedes-Benz on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses say the masked gunmen shot the student at close range before fleeing the scene.
The victim had apparently finished his exam in the Political Science Department roughly an hour before his untimely death.
Two other victims in the JLK Mercedes-Benz who survived the incident were reportedly sent to the University of Benin Health Care Center.
One student said, “They shot him at close range, and there was no way he could have survived the attack. Two others who were in the vehicles were also injured and rushed to the school’s health care center.”
Operatives from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters responded to the spot to extract the victim’s remains.
SP Emmanuel, the DPO of the Divisional Police Headquarters, said the details of the incident were still unclear.
The state police command has yet to publish a formal statement on the situation.
In a related incident, another student was allegedly chased with a machete at the Social Science Lecture Theatre on Saturday but escaped unharmed.
