Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is representing Nigeria at an emergency ECOWAS meeting following a coup that overthrew President Alpha Conde in Guinea.

The Vice President is representing President Muhammadu Buhari at the important virtually held meeting on Wednesday.

Chronicle NG understands that at the end of the Emergency ECOWAS meeting, west African countries are going to come out with a position which is the restoration of democracy to Guinea.

Also in attendance at the Extraordinary Session are the Heads of State and Government.

The Nigerian government had condemned the military takeover in Guinea. In a terse statement by the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs it said, “The Government of Nigeria strongly condemns and rejects any unconstitutional change of government and therefore calls on those behind this coup to restore constitutional order without delay and protect all lives and property.”

Chronicle NG reported that President Conde was arrested from the Guinean Presidential palace by the military’s special forces, led by Lieutenant-Colonel Mamady Doumbouya.

The coup is reportedly a fallout of a political crisis that erupted when President Conde, who has been in office since December 2010, changed the constitution to allow him to stay in office for a third term.
