Ghana has fired coach Chris Hughton following their group-stage exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars finished with two points in Group B and drew 2-2 with Egypt and Mozambique after losing 2-1 to Cape Verde in their first match.

Ghana had remote chances of progressing as one of the four best-ranked third-place teams but was eliminated on Tuesday due to unfavorable results.

Hughton was named as Ghana’s head coach in February of last year.

“Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect,” a Ghana Football Association (GFA) statement said. , External

“The executive council has also decided to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.

“The GFA will, in the coming days, provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.”

Hughton, the former Newcastle United and Brighton manager, began working as a technical adviser for the four-time European winners in February 2022.

He succeeded Otto Addo as manager after Addo resigned down during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where Ghana finished last in Group H with one win from three games.

Ghana also failed to go past the group stage of the 2021 Afcon finals in Cameroon, while the West Africans were eliminated in Ivory Coast.

The GFA stated that it was “100%” behind Hughton after a fan had a “verbal altercation” with the coach following their upset defeat to Cape Verde.

It appeared that the 65-year-old would lead the Black Stars to the last 16, with Ghana finishing second in Group B and leading 2-0 over Mozambique in their last group encounter.

However, the Mambas struck twice in second-half stoppage time to seal an improbable draw and send the Ghanaians home.

Under Hughton, the West Africans had a mixed start to their 2026 World Cup qualifiers, overcoming Madagascar in stoppage time before losing 1-0 in the Comoros.
