The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to deploy a biometric identity verification platform, known as V-Pass, across the country’s domestic airports to enhance security and improve passenger processing.
The initiative, developed in partnership with Verxid Technologies Limited, will introduce facial recognition technology that enables passengers to verify their identities electronically, reducing reliance on physical identity documents and speeding up movement through airport security checkpoints and boarding gates.
According to a statement issued by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the project was reviewed during a strategic meeting between FAAN and Verxid Technologies Limited, where both organisations assessed deployment plans, security safeguards and passenger experience improvements.
The authority said the rollout is designed to strengthen aviation security while delivering a more seamless travel experience for passengers.
FAAN’s Director of Commercial and Business Development, Adebola Agunbiade, described the V-Pass platform as another milestone in the agency’s ongoing digital transformation programme.
She said the technology demonstrates FAAN’s commitment to deploying innovative solutions that improve passenger facilitation while reinforcing security across Nigeria’s domestic airports.
Under the new system, Nigerian travellers will complete a one-time registration using their National Identification Number (NIN) and facial biometric capture. Foreign passengers will enrol using their passports through Optical Character Recognition (OCR), supported by biometric authentication.
FAAN said passenger identities will be verified twice—before entering restricted airport areas and again before boarding flights. The dual-verification process is expected to reduce identity fraud, impersonation and unauthorised access, while giving security agencies greater confidence in passenger authentication.
Travellers will be able to complete the process through self-service kiosks or with assistance from trained FAAN personnel. Electronic access gates will also be installed to automate entry into controlled areas, shorten queues and improve passenger flow across terminals.
According to the developers, first-time registration will take about one minute, while future biometric verification is expected to be completed in under 30 seconds.
Beyond passenger verification, the V-Pass platform will provide airlines with secure digital access to flight schedules, passenger manifests and boarding statistics.
FAAN also assured travellers that the platform fully complies with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), with data protection remaining a key component of the project.
