Two employees of the Damboa Local Education Authority (LEA) lost their lives on Monday when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated along the Damboa-Maiduguri highway in Borno state.
The victims, identified as Blessings Luka and Gideon Bitterleaf, were traveling from Damboa to Maiduguri when the tragic incident occurred, according to Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency publication focused on the Lake Chad region.
The two were seated at the front of a Toyota Hiace van transporting mangoes when the vehicle struck an IED believed to have been planted by insurgents.
Security forces have since launched an investigation into the attack and have cordoned off the affected area.
Recent weeks have seen a worrying increase in IED attacks across Borno state, with insurgents ramping up deadly ambushes on civilians and travelers.
On May 9, five children were wounded after a similar device exploded in Mafa LGA. The region has experienced multiple deadly IED incidents in the past two months.
