The Southwest Youth Advocacy Network has accused Wale Edun, the finance minister, of undermining the federal government’s fight against poverty.

In a statement issued by its convener, Comrade Seun Adeaanu, the organization urged the president to take action against Edun’s recent questionable moves.

The organisation was deeply concerned about the intended relocation of the National Social Investment Programmes (NSIP) and other acts made by the minister, as reported by The Cable.

The group said, “The decision to transfer the NSIP from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation to the Ministry of Finance and Coordinating Economy is unacceptable and warrants appropriate action.

“This move, coming at a time when the government is actively addressing economic challenges and working to alleviate the hardship faced by citizens, is insensitive.”

The group stated that the action is at variance with the directives of President Bola Tinubu that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation should handle such tasks.

According to the group, transferring the NSIP to the finance ministry will undermine ongoing efforts to serve Nigeria’s economic needs.

“Furthermore, the Southwest Youth Advocacy Network is troubled by reports suggesting that Mr. Edun is withholding funds approved and released by the Federal Government for the 2024 Hajj Commission.

“The delay in disbursing these funds and rising Hajj fares are causing distress to intending pilgrims.

“In light of these concerns, we call on President Bola Tinubu to thoroughly investigate the actions of Wale Edun and take decisive measures to address any wrongdoing,” Comrade Adeaanu added.

The group claimed that accountability and transparency in government are vital, particularly in situations affecting people’s welfare.

“We urge President Tinubu to uphold the principles of good governance and ensure that public officials act in the best interest of the citizens,” the statement concluded.
